Se acerca la 10ª edicion del festival de Saint Jean du Gard "Boulegan a l'Ostal", y como es ya tradición los celtófilos de Barcelona estamos preparando la expedición.

Este año además tenemos el aliciente de 2 actuaciones en la programación oficial:

Drónán actuarà el sábado 23 de Abril en le Salon des Luthiers, y la Barcelona Céilí Band actuará el domingo 23 en el escenario al aire libre.

Además de las sesiones irlandesas del viernes y sabado noche en el Espace Paulhan y del domingo en la Crêperie.

Homenaje a Bernard en Cáceres

El pasado 8 de Noviembre, en el marco del VI Caceres Irish Fleadh, se organizó una session en homenaje a Bernard en la plaza de San Jorge.

Según Fernanda, vieja amiga y organizadora del festival, habia unos 20 músicos y se dejó una silla vacia en primera fila.

El pasado 2 de Marzo nuestro amigo y compañero Bernard Molloy nos dejó para siempre de la única manera en que podia hacerlo, en una session y rodeado de todos sus discípulos.

Bernard es el mayor culpable (sinó el único) de que muchos de nosotros estemos bajo el embrujo de la música tradicional irlandesa. Su entusiasmo contagioso y su asombrosa facilidad para interpretar y transmitir la música han permitido que Barcelona haya mantenido una session de forma ininterrumpida durante más de 15 años. Nosotros, sus herederos, no debemos permitir que tan fantástica tradición se pierda y debemos continuar con el mismo entusiasmo sus proyectos y su tarea de formación. Su legado es mucho más importante de lo que podamos llegar a expresar con estas palabras y no se merece otra cosa que continuidad.

Quizas su cuerpo no vuelva a estar presente, pero su espíritu siempre nos acompañará.

Hasta siempre Bernard, y guardanos un taburete en tu session, sea donde sea.

La session del Celtic Cross

Hola a todos,

al parecer el Celtic Cross lleva cerrado un par de semanas y está en traspaso, con lo que de momento no habrá más sesiones ahí.

Como se supone que este domingo habia session os agradaceria que extendierais el mensaje a todos aquellos que no estan en la mail-list de NATT (por ejemple todos los bluegrasseros, bailarines, etc).

Os mantendremos informados si hay mas noticias.

Hola, como nuestros viejos amigos de Wanadoo/Orange (All I wanna do is squeeze that orange!!) han decidido unilateralmente cargarse nuestra web, me he visto obligado a colgarla en otro sitio.

De momento he utilizado mi espacio personal en ya.com, que espero sea un poco más fiable, pero esta vez he tomado la precaución de registrar un dominio que apunte a la web, de manera que si vuelve a pasar solo sea cuestión de modificar la redirección del dominio.

Nuevo local: El racó de les Bruixes

Estrenamos local y idioma. Hasta ahora todo era en inglés, pero añadimos el castellano para facilitar el entendimiento mútuo.

A través de Bernard nos ha llegado la oferta de tocar todos los miércoles en un restaurante de Gràcia llamado El racó de les Bruixes.

Al final y después de un debate interno parece que la solución adoptada es formar grupitos de 4 músicos que nos iremos turnando cada semana.

Empezamos el próximo miércoles 27 de Febrero. Horario de 21:30 a 23:00

Iré actualizando el calendario en este blog para que todo el mundo sepa cuales son las planificaciones (I can't think of a better translation for schedules).

Remarkable visitors at our session

Last Monday we had the visit of American flute player Hanz Araki nice man and great musician. Hanz is of Japanese origin (hence his name Hanzaburo) and is a master of the shakuhachi, the traditional bamboo Zen flute of Japan. His mother is of Irish origin and that's how he started playing Irish Traditional Music.

Next Monday we expect the visit of the great banjo player Gerry O'Connor of "Four Men and a Dog" fame and widely considered the best Irish banjo player in the world.

Looks like our humble session is getting some fame.

Claddagh Ring Dancers 10th Anniversary

Hi everyone,

The Claddagh Ring Dancers are celebrating their 10th Anniversary.
They're organizing a party at El Casinet de Sants (aka Cotxeres de Sants: ) on Saturday, November the 24th.
There'll be food, drink and of course music and dancing. All the bands that have played with/for them in the past are invited, and that includes us !!
Tha party will start around 5PM till late. I'll keep you posted with further details.

I registered at a web site called Guia del Artista, which is intended to support and promote artists of any kind.

You can set up a small 'ficha tecnica' with links to your website, contacts and even promote your performances.

It's free during six months if you include multimedia stuff, and after that there's a small fee of 10 euro .... or you can keep it free WITHOUT the multimedia stuff.
They only ask you to put a link to their website in your own website, which I did gladly.

A Session once again !

Hi all,

Patricia spoke to Niall again and we're definitely starting next Monday (the 13th) at 9:30 PM at the Michael Collins'.

We've just been 3 weeks without a place to play, but it seemed ages to me. I was even a bit low since then.

Anyway. Hope this will go OK and will last longer than the last places we've been. At least they have THE LICENCE so we can't expect those kind of problems anymore.

Digitalized Session Book

Hey Knights.

In yet another attempt of making things easier, I digitalized our Session Book and hung it on the net: http://personales.ya.com/tribas/Session_book.pdf.

This way we don't have to worry about photocopying the book or making people wait for it.
We just give them the link and they can download it, print it, or whatever they like.

The file is in PDF format and occupies around 33Mb.

I couldn't hung it on our web site since, for some strange reason Wanadoo (now Orange) shows an error page instead.

The book can be found as well on the Links section of this very same blog (on the right hand side).

Session hunting

The list is growing ... which is good.

The Quiet Man might be an idea and the other day Declan (Kitty's cook) suggested a new pub opened near Catalunya Radio (Francesc Macià) which according to him must have a license since they own a night club next door.

So summarizing and in no particular order of preference:

Dublin Sports Bar ?? (I think it's called)

This next week we should start the inquiries:

Patricia will try to contact Michel Collins, The George Payne and the new place
Bernard is waiting for his neighbour, who's a friend of El Monasterio's owner
Brendan can try The Quiet Man.

Harlem and Flann O'Brien's start on the bench.

It is important to knew if they'd agree to host a weekly session (preferably same time, i.e Sunday between 8-10:30) but don't commit to anyone. If by chance there's more than one possible place we could choose. It'd be important to know if they have the damned license.

Conversation with Dominic

Last night we went down to talk to Dominic. He showed us the famous 'document', which ended up being just an inspection form. According to Dominic (and it's worth saying that he wasn't there) a couple of 'guardia jurados' on behalf of the Ayuntamiento showed up and started bullying the waiter saying "we know you have live music on Sundays" and other crappy stuff.
In the end the report says that the pub has acoustic live music but they don't have a license, and that they have to install a volume regulator for the music system.

The famous 100.000 euro apparently include the sound proofing, which is done by a company certified that provides the document needed for the license. Clearly a case of 'contubernio' between the company and the City Hall.

Anyway, there's no much we can do really. I told D I'd do some research on the internet and told him to ask his lawyer (or Dubliner's Steven, for that matter) about the possibility of getting a Centro Cultural license. I also mentioned that we were doing the paperwork for setting up the organization and that I would try to find out if the pub could be our 'sede social', in a desperate try to find a gap in the regulation. Anyone knows a lawyer we could ask to?

D confirmed our suspicions that the Michael Collins DO have a music license.

In a totally different matter, we agreed with the D to start a forthnightly pub quiz next Monday (the 30th) at 10PM. Anyone interested?? The Prize: all beers consumed over the night free.

The lineup for this Thursday is Bernard, Lluis, Patricia and Toni.

Brendan asked whether we could increase numbers until we manage to get the session back. Personally I don't think we can, since the bar asked for 3-4 people, and there's no much room available anyway.

The Session problem

Well, as it seems, and having not spoken directly to Dominic yet, we have to look for another place for our sessions.

Last night Bernard, Rob and meself went down to the Celtic Cross to watch the bledy match and hoping to talk to Dominic. He wasn't there but we did some brainstorming in the meantime and we came up a short list of places where we might ask.
The list being:

El Monasterio (according to B. a lovely place by the sea with a big basement and a BABY GRAND!!!)
Michael Collins
George Payne (a new and apparently posh pub in Pza. Urquinaona)
Flann O'Brien's
The Harlem Jazz Club

I'd encourage everyone to suggest more places. We can priorize the list and start the inquiries in order.

Welcome to the new NATT blog service.

This space is intended for sharing thoughts, ideas, tunes, pictures, whatever you like.
I thought that it'd be more handy than the e-mail, as sometimes we get lost in a nightmare of replies and contrareplies.
